2010 LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

  • Support Civil Marriage Equality in Iowa

NO FAMILY SHOULD FACE DISCRIMINATION. Iowa's Constitution must never be amended to limit or

remove the civil rights of any group of people.

EVERY FAITH COMMUNITY'S FREEDOMS established in the First Amendment are affirmed by the Iowa

Supreme Court ruling.  All faith communities and clergy can practice their faith tradition without interference from the government, including those who support marriages of gay and lesbian couples.

WE CELEBRATE in the knowledge that we are one step closer to equality for every person.  All people

deserve to decide whom they love and with whom they wish to make a commitment of civil marriage.

  • Increase subpoena powers of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission

Broaden the subpoena powers given to the Commission to include all areas of investigation.

  • Iowa's Budget as a Moral Document

Ensure civil rights for all. Maintain the current appropriations for the Iowa Civil Rights Commission.

Guarantee all students have access to quality public education.  Maintain the current level of funding for public

schools through the Iowa Department of Education.

Promote English language proficiency with designated English Language Learner (ELL) funds for adult

learners.

.

ADDITIONAL PRIORITIES

  • Ensure public policy creates a welcoming state for immigrants, which is beneficial for our communities and immigrants who choose to live in Iowa.
  • Public funds must benefit public schools.  Private schools should not receive direct or indirect financial assistance from the state.
  • Place limitations on political campaign contributions to better protect the public interest.
  • Cap interest rates and fees on Payday Loans to promote fair lending practices.
